🇻🇳 Travel guide

Vietnam

Visa notes, money, getting around and what we wish we'd known — for Indian travellers heading to Vietnam.

From Hanoi's old quarter and Ha Long Bay to Hoi An's lanterns and the Mekong Delta — great value and even better coffee.

🛂 Visa for Indian passport holders

e-Visa, up to 90 days

Indian passport holders need an e-Visa, valid for up to 90 days with single or multiple entry. Apply only on the official government portal — many look-alike sites charge extra.

Checked 27 Sep 2026. Official source: Vietnam National Portal on Immigration (e-Visa) ↗

🗓️ When to go

The north is best October to April; the centre (Hoi An, Da Nang) February to August; the south December to April.

🚕 Getting around

Grab for taxis and motorbike rides, sleeper buses and trains along the coast, and cheap domestic flights.

💡 Local tips

  • Cross roads at a slow, steady pace — traffic flows around predictable walkers.
  • Try egg coffee in Hanoi and bánh mì everywhere.
  • Carry small notes; many street vendors can't break big ones.

😅 What we wish we'd known

  • The currency has many zeros — double-check 50,000 vs 500,000 notes, which look similar.
  • North and south have very different weather in the same month; pack for both.

Places worth the detour

  • Ha Long Bay — Nearly two thousand jungle-topped karst islands rising out of emerald water — best seen on an overnight junk cruise.
