Tea hills, scenic trains, ancient cities and beaches — a short flight from India with a lot packed into a small island.

🛂 Visa for Indian passport holders

Visa-free for Indian passport holders (register online)

Indian passport holders have been eligible for Sri Lanka's free-visa scheme since October 2024. Rules have changed several times since, so check on the official ETA site whether you still need to register before flying.

🗓️ When to go

December to April for the west and south coasts and hill country; May to September for the east coast (Trincomalee, Arugam Bay).

🚕 Getting around

Scenic trains (book reserved seats early), PickMe and Uber apps, tuk-tuks, and private drivers for multi-day tours.

💡 Local tips

  • The Kandy–Ella train is a highlight; reserved seats sell out weeks ahead.
  • Remove shoes and hats at temples and never pose with your back to a Buddha statue.
  • Agree tuk-tuk fares before the ride, or use the PickMe app.

😅 What we wish we'd known

  • Distances are short but roads are slow — 100 km can take three hours.
  • Indian rupees aren't accepted; carry dollars or cards and change locally.

Places worth the detour

  • Ella & Sigiriya — Tea-country trains over the Nine Arch Bridge, hikes to Little Adam's Peak, and the ancient rock fortress of Sigiriya.
