Ancient temples and bullet trains, neon cities and quiet onsen towns — safe, efficient and endlessly fascinating.

🗓️ When to go
Late March–April for cherry blossoms and October–November for autumn leaves; summer is hot and humid, winter great for snow.
🚕 Getting around
Trains everywhere — an IC card (Suica/PASMO/ICOCA) for local transit and the Shinkansen between cities.
💡 Local tips
- Load a Suica or PASMO on your phone for trains, buses and convenience stores.
- Carry some cash — smaller restaurants and shrines may not take cards.
- Tipping isn't expected and can cause confusion.
😅 What we wish we'd known
- Your appliances need to handle 100 V — most phone and laptop chargers do.
- Trash cans are rare in public; carry a small bag for your rubbish.
Places worth the detour
- Kyoto — Over a thousand temples, wooden machiya lanes in Gion and the vermilion torii tunnel of Fushimi Inari.
- Mount Fuji & Hakone — Japan's iconic volcano reflected in the Fuji Five Lakes, with hot-spring towns in Hakone an hour away.
