🗓️ When to go

September to November and March to May in the south; June to October for the tropical north and the reef.

🚕 Getting around

Domestic flights between cities, Opal cards or contactless in Sydney, and rental cars for road trips.

💡 Local tips

  • Distances are huge — fly between major cities rather than driving.
  • Swim between the red and yellow flags on patrolled beaches.
  • Declare all food at customs; biosecurity fines are strict.

😅 What we wish we'd known

  • The sun is far stronger than it feels — use high-SPF sunscreen even on cloudy days.
  • Seasons are reversed: December is summer.

Places worth the detour

  • Great Barrier Reef — The world's largest coral reef system, with day trips from Cairns and the Whitsunday Islands' Whitehaven Beach.
